Lucknow: In a swift, coordinated action triggered by social media alerts, Uttar Pradesh Police averted two separate suicide attempts in Bareilly and Varanasi in the last 24 hours, highlighting the effectiveness of real-time monitoring and rapid response systems.In the first incident on Mar 28, a 20-year-old youth from the Aonla area of Bareilly posted a video on Instagram stating, “Today is my last day, I am going to consume poison.” The post was flagged by Meta, which sent an alert email to the social media centre at the director general of police headquarters at 4:18pm.Acting immediately, local police reached the youth’s residence within 15 minutes, and found him vomiting, after consuming pesticide. He had also inflicted cuts on his hands.With the help of family members, police rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment and was later discharged.During counselling, the youth revealed that he was under severe emotional distress after a relationship issue.In another incident on Sunday, a 19-year-old youth from Cholapur in Varanasi posted a video on Instagram stating that it was his “last night” and that he had consumed poison. The alert was received by the DGP headquarters at 1:45am.A police team reached his residence within 17 minutes, and found the boy mixing poison in a glass. The cops snatched the glass and prevented him from consuming the poison.He later admitted that he had been preparing to drink pesticide. He was stabilised with immediate care at home and later counselled.The youth, who works as a labourer, told police that he was depressed due to a failed relationship.
