The Karnataka governor, A N Banerji, will hold CM Ramakrishna Hegde’s resignation in abeyance till he discusses all issues with him. Banerji, who was away, returned to the city and told newsmen that he would not take any decision on the resignation till he had a “long talk” with Hegde.
UK to cooperate on extradition
Britain has offered its cooperation to India in the extradition of terrorists as part of its resolve to ensure that this country does not become a safe haven for those who have committed offences of violence in India. British Home Secretary Douglas Hurd coupled the offer with a warning to those who have settled in Britain not to disturb peace, “in pursuit of quarrels which have nothing to do with this country”. The warning follows attacks on moderate Sikh leaders in Britain from extremists.
Cold wave intensifies
Renewed spells of scattered to widespread snowfall in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and isolated rains in the plains during the past 24 hours intensified the cold wave conditions in most of northern India. Dense fogs and mists, which reduced the visibility to between nil and 500 metres, disrupted normal schedule of air, train and bus services.
Oswal Group raided
The Enforcement Directorate conducted day-long raids on the premises of Oswal Group of companies in Bombay in connection with alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act. According to reliable sources, the raids revealed that the company had exported diamonds through local dealer Ketan Diamonds to the United Kingdom in 1983, the proceeds of which, worth about $3 lakh, were still outstanding.
