Lucknow: What began as abdominal swelling and discomfort one day refused to go for months and eventually landed a 35-year-old woman at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS).Here, the doctors found that a giant tumour, almost equal to the size of a full-term pregnancy, was the cause of her trouble. It also carried around 7.5 lt of fluid.The tumour was also pressing against her bladder and intestines, making even routine movement uncomfortable.To bring relief to the patient, a team of SGPGIMS gynaecologists removed the tumour. Doctors also found a cyst in her right ovary during the surgery. A frozen-section examination showed that the tumour was benign.This finding allowed doctors to avoid more extensive surgery. They removed the affected tumour while preserving the woman’s uterus and right ovary, keeping her future chances of having children in mind.The surgery was performed by Dr Nidhi Singh, Dr Anju Rani, Dr Monica and Dr Shikha, while Dr Nidhi Singh also handled the anaesthesia. Dr Ritu Verma and Dr Ram Naval Rao contributed to the pathology assessment, while the nursing team comprised Divya, Sonali, Vandana and Birbhan Verma.
