Lucknow: A 17-year-old girl was hacked to death by her elder brother in a Sitapur village on Saturday morning allegedly over her relationship with a youth from her neighbourhood.Police said the accused fled after killing his sister.According to police, tension was simmering in the family after the girl eloped with the youth on July 22. After the family filed a complaint, police traced the girl the next day, and handed her back to the family after producing her before the court.Investigators said arguments over the relationship continued ever since the girl’s return. On Saturday, another argument broke out between the siblings, which soon turned violent.Police said the accused first assaulted his sister inside the house. When she tried to escape, he chased her, knocked her to the ground and attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon. The girl sustained deep wounds to her neck and died on the spot. The victim’s mother, who witnessed the incident, told police that she had intervened during an earlier argument and even asked her son to leave the house. However, he allegedly returned shortly afterwards and resumed the assault.Police said the body has been sent for postmortem, while forensic experts were called to the scene to collect evidence.Additional superintendent of police (south) Durgesh Singh said preliminary findings suggest the murder stemmed from the family’s opposition to the teenager’s relationship.Police have registered a case and formed multiple teams to nab the accused. Raids are being conducted at possible hideouts while family members and locals are being questioned.
