A passenger train derailed and flipped to its side near Lewes in East Sussex, southern England, on Thursday, disrupting several rail routes in the area.Network Rail said a Southern service came off the tracks in the Lewes area shortly before 4 pm BST. British Transport Police said officers were at the scene near Lewes station along with paramedics and fire crews.Photos from the scene appeared to show at least two carriages overturned on their sides, with emergency workers at the site. There were no immediate reports of injuries or casualties.A spokesperson for Network Rail and Southern Rail said, “We are aware that a passenger train has derailed in the Lewes area of East Sussex. Emergency services are on site and we will update with more information when we can,” as quoted by BBC.South East Coast Ambulance Service also confirmed it was responding to the incident on the line between Haywards Heath and Lewes. Emergency services urged people to avoid the area, while rail passengers were advised to allow up to 60 minutes of additional travel time.Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said on X: “Grateful to emergency services who are on the scene supporting those impacted. We are working quickly with the rail industry and local partners to assist passengers.”The cause of the derailment was not immediately known.
