Anthropic submitted a proposal for the Pentagon’s $100 million autonomous drone swarm prize challenge, pitching Claude as a system to translate spoken commander intent into fleet coordination – explicitly excluding autonomous targeting. The submission came while Anthropic was locked in tense negotiations with the Defense Department over red lines on military AI use. The company wasn’t selected. Days later, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the Pentagon to bar its contractors from any commercial dealings with Anthropic, and OpenAI swiftly announced a new classified-systems agreement with the DoD. The sequence is hard to read as anything other than a door closing — and a competitor walking through it.
