Microsoft released an official Azure MCP Server that lets AI agents interact with Azure resources through natural language via the Model Context Protocol. It plugs into VS Code, Visual Studio, Cursor, Windsurf, IntelliJ, Eclipse, and Cline, with GitHub Copilot agent mode and OpenAI Agents SDK as supported clients. Authentication runs through Entra ID, and access is scoped by Azure RBAC. The practical upside for developers is being able to list storage accounts, run KQL queries, or deploy with azd without leaving their AI coding workflow. MCP adoption has accelerated sharply across cloud providers and tooling vendors – Anthropic’s protocol is quietly becoming the standard interface layer between AI agents and infrastructure.
