Lucknow: A 15-day ‘Jal Mahotsav’ event was launched on Sunday, that aimed at handing over the responsibility of water supply to households in the rural areas to gram panchayat. The programme organised by the state water and sanitation mission (SWSM) was held at Mohanlalganj and aimed to achieve 100 per cent piped water connections to households.Almost 22,000 villages in the state are going to be covered under the programme, which will continue until Mar 22. Mohanlalganj MLA Amresh Kumar, while launching the programme at Hussainabad Doolahpur village in Gosainganj, said, “More than 750 families staying in the area are going to benefit through the programme. I also drank the water from one of the households and was satisfied with the quality being supplied.”Managing director of the mission, Raj Shekhar, said that 11km of pipeline was laid to provide water to all the households in Gosainganj village. “Until the mission was launched, only 25,000 tap connections were working, but their numbers have gone up to 2.25 lakh now,” he said.
