Meta acquired Moltbook, the Reddit-like social network restricted to AI agents operating through OpenClaw, and is folding its creators Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr into Meta Superintelligence Labs under Alexandr Wang. The platform exploded in late January, registering millions of bots within days, but its most viral moments turned out to be fabricated – including a widely shared post where an agent appeared to organize a secret language among bots, later revealed to be a human exploiting Moltbook’s weak verification. The acquisition is a strange fit for a company that already struggles with authenticity on its own platforms. Meta seems less interested in the product itself and more in what Moltbook learned about agent-to-agent interaction at scale, a research problem that Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft are all circling from different angles.
