Promptfoo’s cofounders Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo confirmed the OpenAI acquisition from their side, emphasizing that the open-source project will continue supporting any AI model or provider – not just OpenAI. The 23-person team joins intact, and the plan is to embed Promptfoo’s red-teaming and vulnerability scanning directly into OpenAI’s model and infrastructure layers. With 350,000 developers and 130,000 monthly active users already on the platform, the installed base is substantial enough that killing third-party support would be commercially reckless. Still, open-source projects acquired by platform companies have a mixed track record when it comes to maintaining vendor neutrality over time. The real test will be whether Promptfoo’s multi-provider evaluation stays a priority once the team is fully absorbed into OpenAI’s roadmap.
