Lucknow: In the wake of unusually long queues at fuel stations, the police have intensified public outreach efforts across Lucknow, urging residents to remain calm and avoid panic buying of petrol and diesel. The Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Lucknow, Babloo Kumar, on Thursday reassured citizens that there is no shortage of fuel in the city, with around 290 petrol pumps adequately stocked. JCP highlighted that panic buying has led to an unexpected surge in consumption. “There has been a sudden increase of nearly 40% in fuel purchase compared to normal days due to panic buying. This artificial spike is putting unnecessary pressure on distribution,” he said. To counter the situation, police teams have been deployed across the city, making announcements through loudspeakers and directly appealing to the public at busy intersections and fuel stations. Cops at Chowk, Gomtinagar, and Indiranagar were spotted using loudspeakers. Officers were seen advising people not to rush for refuelling or fill their tanks unnecessarily. “Fuel is available in ample quantity. Citizens should purchase only as per their immediate requirement. There is no need to hoard,” the JCP emphasised. JCP Kumar warned that such panic-driven behaviour could disrupt otherwise stable supply chains, leading to temporary shortages at specific outlets despite overall availability. The sudden spike has also resulted in crowding at petrol pumps and increased traffic congestion in several areas. Police have stepped up monitoring at key locations to ensure orderly supply and prevent any law-and-order issues arising from overcrowding.
