Dario Amodei met with Prime Minister Albanese in Canberra to sign an MOU covering AI safety research, joint evaluations with Australia’s AI Safety Institute, and workforce training aligned with the country’s National AI Plan. Anthropic is distributing AUD$3 million in Claude API credits to four research institutions – ANU, Murdoch Children’s, Garvan Institute, and Curtin University – focused on clinical genomics, precision medicine, and computing education. A Sydney office is planned as the company’s fourth in the Asia-Pacific region, and data center infrastructure investment is being explored. Anthropic now has safety institute partnerships in the US, UK, Japan, and Australia. The pattern of frontier AI labs signing government MOUs before opening regional offices is becoming standard operating procedure for international expansion.
