Lucknow: Lucknow-based senior neuro physiotherapist, Dr Akanksha Upadhyay, presented her research-based case study on Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) at the national conference on Allied Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (NCAHRS) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi. The case study, titled ‘Functional recovery in GBS through structured physical therapy,” detailed the successful rehabilitation of an 11-year-old girl. The study highlighted how a well-structured and scientifically designed 8-week physiotherapy programme led to significant improvements in the patient’s muscle strength, balance, walking ability, and independence in daily activities.During the treatment, the child underwent progressive mobilization, range of motion exercises, progressive resistance training, gait training, and balance training. Additionally, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and Virtual Reality-based exercises were used to enhance muscle activation and improve trunk control. In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in cases of GBS, making such effective rehabilitation models increasingly important.Dr. Akanksha Upadhyay’s research highlights that timely initiation and systematically executed rehabilitation can yield positive outcomes even in complex conditions like Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
