Lucknow: Under a dark, smoke-filled sky, hundreds of fire-hit families in Vikas Nagar spent a long night without roof, food, or certainty about tomorrow. As the blaze reduced over 280 shanties to ashes, more than 1,000 people—mostly migrant workers from Hardoi, Sitapur, Barabanki and Lakhimpur Kheri—were left squatting on roadsides, clutching whatever little they could save. With no beds, they lay on bare ground amid lingering heat of the fire. Hungry children and elderly lay around staring blankly into the darkness. “There’s nothing left—not even food grains or a bottle of water,” said Ramesh, a daily-wage labourer. But amid despair, help began to arrive—quietly, humbly and from unexpected quarters.Residents from colonies in and around Vikas Nagar area stepped out carried whatever they could , including packed home-cooked meals, bunches of bananas, packets of biscuits and bottles of drinking water. A few arrived with cartons of fruit juice, while some set up makeshift tea stations by the roadside, serving hot chai to families.Resident Seema Gupta said, “Children crying for food… how could we stay indoor? I packed whatever I had cooked at home and brought it. It’s not much, but at least someone won’t sleep hungry.”Another resident, Imran Khan, distributed bananas and biscuits to children moving barefoot in the dark. “They reminded me of my own kids. One boy kept saying he had not eaten since afternoon… I just could not walk away.”For many victims, it meant everything. “My children were crying of hunger,” said Shabo, holding her toddler close. “A woman came and gave us food packets and tea. At that moment, it felt like someone had given back our lives.” Near a broken boundary wall, a group of young volunteers poured tea into disposable cups to distribute. “They have lost their homes, their savings… we can at least stand with them tonight,” said Vikalp Goswami. Some arranged basic medicines. There was no coordination, no official call—just a shared instinct to help.
