Tilak Varma’s maiden IPL century was not just about numbers. It was about clarity, patience, and then pure execution under pressure. Named Player of the Match after his unbeaten 101 off 45 balls, the Mumbai Indians batter reflected on what the innings meant, both personally and for the team. “Yeah, of course, the first hundred will always be special. And to be honest, it was very important for us. We don’t have much time from here. Every game is important for us,” Tilak said. Coming into the game on the back of a lean run, he admitted his primary focus was simply to spend time at the crease. “In the last five games, I haven’t spent much time in the middle. So I was just thinking that this game, I want to spend time in the center of the wicket. If you see the first 20 balls, I was just going ball by ball. I was just batting.” That cautious start saw him crawl to 17 off 20 deliveries before a dramatic shift in tempo. What followed was a stunning assault where he smashed 82 runs off his last 23 balls. “And later on, once I had faced a few balls on the wicket, I know what I am capable of, and exactly I have done that. I’m really grateful for that,” he added. Tilak stressed that his approach was dictated by the match situation rather than premeditated strokeplay. “I was just seeing the situation, what the team needs. At that moment, I was stable, keeping my head still and following my basics. I’ve got all the fancy shots. When the team needs, I can use that. But especially when you’re batting under pressure, all you need is backing your skill. And that’s what I backed today, and it has given me good results.” He also credited his partner Naman Dhir for stabilising the innings during a tricky phase after early wickets. “Yeah, it was very important. The way Naman played at that moment was very crucial for us, with a positive intent. Credit goes to him as well. And after that, the way I carried on, I’m really proud.” The contest itself had begun with Kagiso Rabada striking early, removing three batters in the powerplay to leave MI in trouble. However, Tilak’s turnaround innings lifted them to 199 for five, a total that proved more than enough. The bowlers then sealed a comprehensive 99-run win over Gujarat Titans, with Jasprit Bumrah providing early breakthroughs and Ashwani Kumar leading the charge through the middle with a four-wicket haul. Beyond the match-winning impact, the century marked a defining moment in Tilak Varma’s IPL journey, a knock built on patience, belief, and a fearless finish.
