Lucknow: Improper use of a car’s air-conditioning system during peak summer can reduce cooling, lower fuel efficiency and increase engine load, say experts, advising motorists to follow conducive practices.A common mistake is switching on AC immediately after entering the car. Experts recommend rolling down windows for a few minutes to release heated air trapped in the chamber. Initially, the fan should be run at high speed, before switching on the AC with windows closed for faster cooling.Keeping the temperature around 24 degrees Celsius and using recirculation mode after cooling improves efficiency. Direct airflow should be avoided. Automobile workshop owner Ubaid Khan said cars parked in direct sunlight heat up quickly and hot air is trapped inside.“This increases pressure on AC compressor and reduces cooling efficiency. High cabin temperatures too affect the condenser’s ability to release heat, while higher refrigerant pressure adds to system strain, which results in slower cooling, frequent AC cycling, reduced pickup and a 5-15% drop in mileage, especially in traffic,” he said.Anil Verma, a dealership supervisor, stressed regular maintenance is important. Dirty filters, low refrigerant and dust on condenser reduce performance. Servicing twice a year, especially before summer, is advised.
