US President Donald Trump made a light-hearted remark about Britain’s royal family, joking that his late mother once had a “crush” on King Charles III.The comment came during an official ceremony on the White House South Lawn to welcome King Charles and Queen Camilla. Trump referred to his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, and her admiration for the royal family. He said his mother “loved the royal family and she loved the Queen” and would closely follow royal events on television.“Any time the Queen was involved in the ceremony or anything, my mother would be glued to the television,” he said.He added: “And should say, ‘Look, Donald, look how beautiful that is.’”Trump then said, “But I also remember her saying very clearly, ‘Charles, look, young Charles. He’s so cute,’” before joking, “My mother had a crush on Charles. Can you believe it? I wonder what she’s thinking right now.” He also spoke about his family’s Scottish roots, noting that his mother was born in Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides and moved to US at the age of 19. Trump described the region as “very serious Scotland.”The president briefly mentioned his parents’ long marriage, saying his mother and father, Fred Trump, were married for 63 years. He joked with first lady Melania Trump that they would not match that record. The comment drew attention for its personal tone and its reference to the British monarch. Trump has spoken in the past about his mother’s connection to Scotland and her interest in royal affairs. There was no official response from Buckingham Palace regarding the remark. The royal family typically does not respond to informal comments made by political figures.Trump’s relationship with the British royal family has been closely followed over the years. He has made state visits to the United Kingdom and met members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II and then-Prince Charles, who is now King Charles III.King Charles III became monarch following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and has continued to focus on official duties and public engagements. As part of the visit, he is expected to take part in a gift exchange and guestbook signing, hold a bilateral meeting with Trump, and later address a joint meeting of Congress. Meanwhile, the first lady and Queen Camilla are scheduled to meet students learning about the history of US and UK.
