Lucknow: Lucknow Traffic Police said it will launch a 30-day awareness campaign from May 4 to ensure the universal installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles across the city. The campaign will focus on educating vehicle owners about the importance of HSRP, the online application process, timelines, and associated legal provisions.DCP Traffic, Raveena Tyagi, said the initiative is being undertaken in view of persistent non-compliance, with a large number of vehicles still operating without standardised number plates, thereby hindering identification and enforcement efforts. She said that HSRP-equipped vehicles enhance traceability, enabling quicker detection in criminal cases, better monitoring through surveillance systems, and more effective traffic regulation. “From crime detection to road discipline and public safety—especially in cases involving crimes against women—accurate vehicle identification is critical. HSRP plays a central role in that ecosystem,” she said. She clarified that while enforcement during this phase will remain minimal and geared towards awareness, minimal enforcement should not be misconstrued as exemption. “Legal action can still be initiated where necessary,” Tyagi said. From June 1, the department will initiate an enforcement drive with strict penalties. Violators may face challans ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000, and authorised officers will have the power to detain or seize non-compliant vehicles.
