NEW DELHI: West Bengal delivered a historic verdict on Monday as BJP is set to secure its first-ever assembly election victory in the state, ending chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule and breaking the Trinamool Congress stronghold. The results come after a record voter turnout of 92.47%, reflecting a highly charged and closely watched election. The BJP’s campaign slogan “Bhoy out, Bharosa in” appeared to resonate with voters, overtaking the TMC’s long-standing “Maa maati manush” narrative.
Counting of votes began at 8 am across 77 centres under tight security, covering 293 of the 294 Assembly seats. As trends firmed up through the day, the BJP showed a sharp surge compared to its 2021 performance, where it had won 77 seats with a 38.15% vote share.By midday, multiple trackers indicated the BJP either crossing or nearing the majority mark, with leads in the range of 140–150 seats and vote share estimates between 46% and 48%. The TMC, in contrast, lagged significantly behind in the trends.Polling was conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with an electorate of more than 3.21 crore voters participating. As the final results take shape, the focus now shifts to the full list of BJP winners and losers across the constituencies, which will define the scale and impact of this landmark political shift in West Bengal.
