Lucknow: A retired agriculture department official allegedly ran over his 35-year-old neighbour with his car while parking it outside his house in the Mahanagar area, killing him on the spot after causing critical chest injuries, police said.The accused, identified as Anil Kumar Singh, 65, was arrested from his residence on Saturday following the incident, which occurred in Gali Number 1 of Nishatganj under the Mahanagar police station limits.The deceased, Ajauar Rahman, 35, worked as a welder and was the youngest of five brothers. According to his family, Ajauar stepped out for a stroll after dinner when the incident took place around 1 am.Ajauar’s elder brother, Ataur Rahman Khan, alleged that Singh was parking his car, bearing registration number UP 32 JE 4578, in a rash and negligent manner when he hit Ajauar. The impact caused the victim to fall onto the road, and the car allegedly ran over his chest.Locals rushed to the spot after hearing screams and found Ajauar lying unconscious beneath the vehicle. Family members rushed him to Bhau Rao Deoras Hospital. Due to the seriousness of his condition, doctors referred him to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, where he was declared dead during treatment.Police officials said the victim suffered severe chest injuries after the wheel passed over him. The sudden death triggered panic and anger in the locality, with grieving family members alleging negligence on the part of the accused driver.Investigators said the accused remained at his house after the incident and was arrested from there on Saturday. During questioning, Singh reportedly told police that the incident occurred accidentally while he was parking the vehicle. He claimed that he did not realise the victim had come in front of the car and that he pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.Police registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS and sent the body for post-mortem. Further investigation is underway.
