Lucknow: Doctors at a city hospital performed scarless robotic surgery on a 35-year-old tonsil cancer patient, who recovered within four days. The tumour was removed through the mouth without external cuts, scars or treatment that calls for prolonged recovery.The patient, Shakeel Ahmad of Bahraich, was diagnosed with Stage II tonsil cancer after persistent throat pain and difficulty in swallowing. He underwent Trans Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS), in which tumour was removed through the mouth, while neck lymph nodes are taken out through a small incision.He resumed oral intake soon after surgery with minimal discomfort and was discharged on Saturday. Director, surgical oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dr Kamlesh Verma said TORS in some cases can reduce need for chemotherapy or radiation and ensures faster recovery. He advised not to ignore persistent throat pain, difficulty in swallowing or swelling on neck.
