NEW DELHI: At least three people died after a massive fire broke out in a residential building in southeast Delhi’s Tughlakabad Extension area in the early hours of Friday, news agency ANI reported. As per the report, six people were rescued by personnel of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) and shifted to a nearby hospital with the assistance of the Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS). Officials said at least eight injured persons were earlier evacuated from the building and taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. The fire broke out in a building located in Gali No 1 near Naya Tara Apartment on Madhyam Marg, under the jurisdiction of Okhla Fire Station-1 (OKH-1).DFS Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO) Yashwant Singh Meena said the building comprises a ground floor and five upper floors and is situated in a narrow lane, making rescue and firefighting operations challenging.According to the fire department, multiple calls reporting a blaze and people trapped inside the building were received between 2.35am and 2.37am.In response, the department rushed three water tenders, two water bowsers, one breathing support unit and a Quick Response Vehicle to the spot. An additional water tender-cum-light fire unit was later deployed following repeated distress calls.Preliminary information from the fire department suggested that the blaze originated in vehicles parked inside the building. Firefighters launched rescue efforts after receiving reports that several residents were trapped. At 3.45am, officials informed that the fire had been brought under control. The DFS issued a stop message at 4am, indicating that firefighting operations had been completed. However, rescue efforts continued even after the flames were extinguished.During the final phase of the operation, firefighters rescued one more person from the building, taking the total number of people rescued by DFS personnel to six.(With agency inputs)
