Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has said it has been ordered by the US government to suspend access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all foreign nationals, citing national security concerns. The company said it received the export control directive on Friday, but was not given specific details about the security concerns behind the decision.According to Anthropic, the government believes it has identified a method of bypassing or “jailbreaking” the Fable 5 model.“The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Anthropic models will not be affected,” the company said.Anthropic also said it believes there may have been a “misunderstanding” and added that it is working to restore access to the models as soon as possible. In a separate report, Axios said the Trump administration is now blocking access to these advanced AI models for foreign governments, companies and individuals. It cited a letter from US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, stating that the models would come under export controls outside the United States and for all foreign persons within the country. The report also said the action followed claims that another company had managed to jailbreak the Mythos model. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order asking major AI companies to submit their advanced models for government cybersecurity testing before public release.Separately, the US Defence Department had earlier described Anthropic as a “supply-chain risk”.
