Lucknow: Practising meditation before surgery can reduce anxiety and improve heart rate and ensure blood pressure stability in patients undergoing treatment for varicose veins, a joint study by Lucknow University (LU) and King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has found.Varicose veins are swollen, twisted and enlarged veins that typically appear just under the skin in the legs and feet. The study was conducted by assistant professor at LU’s department of yoga and alternative medicine Amarjeet Yadav, professor in the department of anaesthesiology and critical care at KGMU Dr Rajni Gupta and MD resident Chaitanya Gahlot. The study involved 60 patients aged between 25 and 60 years who were scheduled for endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) for varicose veins, said Dr Gupta. “Participants were divided into two groups. One group practised meditation for a week before surgery, while the other received standard surgical care,” she said. The patients who practised meditation reported lower levels of anxiety before and after surgery and better vital parameters.
