Manoj.BadgeriThane: Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s reported ‘Operation Tiger,’ aimed at bringing Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs into the Shiv Sena fold, could, if it succeeds, significantly bolster his political clout, both within the NDA and Maharashtra’s governing Mahayuti alliance, political observers said. The Shinde Sena had seven Lok Sabha MPs till late Wednesday, and if the proposed defections materialise in the next few days, the party’s tally could rise to 13, surpassing JD(U) and placing it among the NDA’s larger allies, behind TDP and NCPI in parliamentary strength.Sena functionaries and hardcore Sainiks believe that any expansion in strength would not just reinforce the NDA but also lead to recognition of Sena’s contribution with a share in the Union cabinet. “With an increased presence in the Parliament now, we could claim for a cabinet berth,” said a senior Sena functionary, requesting anonymity.Observers said the gains could also have implications on state politics, where Sena politicians continue to harbour ambitions of seeing Shinde return as the chief minister. Observers pointed out how Shinde frequently highlighted his decisions and initiatives from his tenure as CM during public appearances, signalling that the aspiration remained alive.“Shinde enjoys a strong equation with both PM Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. His recent performance may improve his bargaining position,” said a party functionary.Meanwhile, Sena MP Naresh Mhaske and national secretary Shaina NC dismissed speculations and said that the focus of the party was to strengthen the NDA. “We have not poached into any party, but if their netas are influenced by Shinde, then we will always welcome them. Our numbers may grow in the coming days,” said the two Sena politicians. However, despite speculation over shifting equations, political analysts believe that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’ position in the state remains secure. Mridul Nile, professor of political science at the University of Mumbai, said that while Eknath Shinde and his Shiv Sena could gain greater influence at the Centre, Fadnavis’ dominance in Maharashtra is unlikely to face any serious challenge before 2029.
