Lucknow: Ahead of the festival of Holi, excise minister Nitin Agarwal appealed to people across the state to celebrate the occasion responsibly and refrain from alcohol consumption, stressing that misuse of liquor often leads to tragic incidents and disrupts families. In his message to the public, Agarwal described Holi as one of the most significant festivals in Hindu tradition, symbolising joy, unity and the mending of relationships. “Holi is a festival where people forget past grievances and come together. It should be celebrated with enthusiasm, harmony and mutual respect,” he said. The minister, however, expressed concern over recurring incidents during Holi, particularly involving youth, where alcohol consumption leads to accidents, violence and loss of lives. “Every year, we hear about unfortunate incidents during Holi. Many families suffer irreparable losses and in several cases, lives are lost. One of the major reasons behind such tragedies is excessive alcohol consumption,” he noted.Appealing directly to citizens, especially young people, Agarwal said, “Do not let alcohol dilute the vibrant colours of Holi. Stay away from liquor and celebrate the festival in a safe and joyful manner with your loved ones.”He emphasised that Holi should strengthen social bonds rather than lead to distress. “Celebrate with your family and friends, resolve differences, and make the festival more beautiful and meaningful,” he added.Extending his greetings, the minister wished all residents of Uttar Pradesh a safe, joyful, and harmonious Holi, urging them to prioritise togetherness and well-being over indulgence.
