Apple is adding voice-based chatbot support to CarPlay in iOS 26.4, opening the dashboard to Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini for the first time. Drivers will be able to query these services hands-free, though third-party apps can’t control vehicle functions or activate via wake word – you still have to open the app first. The update requires Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google to ship CarPlay-specific builds using a new voice control entitlement. It’s a notably restrained rollout by Apple standards, keeping AI assistants on a short leash while Siri retains its system-level privileges. The move follows a pattern where Apple lets third parties onto its platforms just enough to deflect antitrust pressure without surrendering the default position.
