VHP president Ashok Kumar welcomed the decision of Champat Rai and Anil Mishra to step down, saying they resigned on moral grounds.“It is a courageous decision on their part to resign from their posts. It reflects their commitment to a fair and impartial inquiry into the entire matter,” Kumar said in a statement. He added that neither Rai nor Mishra was under any legal or organisational obligation to resign. “Till Friday, I had maintained that it was entirely their decision to choose the course of action they considered appropriate,” he said.Kumar also took a swipe at those demanding the resignations, alleging that they had never set a similar example when facing allegations themselves. “Whether it was Arvind Kejriwal or the Congress leadership, they never stepped down when accusations were levelled against them. Rajiv Gandhi, too, continued in office despite facing allegations in the Bofors scandal involving Rs 64 crore,” he said.“Their decision to resign deserves appreciation. They have acted responsibly and demonstrated sensitivity towards the need for a transparent investigation,” Kumar added.
