Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Vidyalaya (JPNSV) schools are a flagship residential school network run by the Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department to provide free, quality education to children from economically weaker and socially disadvantaged families, particularly those belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and poor families from the General category. The schools are affiliated with either the Central Board of Secondary Education or the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, depending on the institution.These schools have emerged as one of Uttar Pradesh’s major initiatives for expanding access to quality residential education for disadvantaged children, with substantial expansion in infrastructure, enrolment and academic performance over the past nine years.Everything included, nothing chargedHostel, meals, uniform, books and stationery are provided free of cost. Students in Classes 11 and 12 also receive free coaching for NEET, JEE and CUET. There are 101 schools in total, managed by the UP Social Welfare Department, 69 are for boys and 32 are for girls.Who can apply?Applicants must be residents of Uttar Pradesh and must have passed Class 5. Annual family income must not exceed Rs 46,080 in rural areas and Rs 56,460 in urban areas. Seats are reserved as follows: 60 per cent for Scheduled Castes, 25 percent for Other Backward Classes and 15 percent for the General Category students from economically weaker families.Fully-equipped classroomsEach school has a science lab, computer lab, tab lab, smart classroom, library, playground, recreation room and internet access. The curriculum follows CBSE standards. Sports and overall development are part of daily school life alongside academics.One entrance exam-one merit listApplications are submitted online at ats. upsdc. gov. in. Candidates register, upload a photograph and guardian signature, and submit the printed form to the concerned school with required documents. Admission is through a state-level entrance examination. It has now grown into 101 CBSE schools across the state. For students from SC, OBC and General Category families, this scheme removes the one barrier that stopped them from accessing good education. Progress in Uttar Pradesh (2017–2026)
- Before 2017, Uttar Pradesh had 93 Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya schools. By 2024–25, the government increased the sanctioned number to 120, with around 100 schools operational (about 70 boys’ schools and 30 girls’ schools), while additional schools are being made functional in phases.
- Student enrolment has increased from about 32,400 in 2018–19 to around 35,000 in 2024–25. In the 2026 UP Board examinations, Sarvodaya schools recorded outstanding results:
- 99.2% pass rate in Class X.
- 99% pass rate in Class XII.
- Demand for admission has grown sharply. For the 2026–27 session, over 68,000 applications were received 10,790 seats, reflecting the popularity of these schools.
Recent initiatives
- Free coaching for competitive examinations like JEE and NEET for meritorious students, including a dedicated coaching centre for girls in Mirzapur.
- Recruitment of experienced retired teachers to improve teaching quality.
- Partnership with the Boarding Schools Association of India to adopt best practices in academics, hostel management and student welfare.
