Lucknow: Doctors at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) successfully removed a rare five-kilogram uterine fibroid from a 30-year-old woman while preserving her uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries in a complex surgery. The woman had visited the institute’s gynaecology outpatient department with severe abdominal swelling caused by a large abdominal mass. Scans showed a giant fibroid in the uterus along with a 7cm cyst on one of the ovaries. Doctors successfully removed both the fibroid and the ovarian cyst while preserving the patient’s reproductive organs. The surgery was performed by Dr Anju Rani, Dr Nidhi, Dr Monica and Dr Ritesh, with anaesthesia support from Dr Ayushi. Doctors said operating on such large fibroids is technically challenging because of the risk of excessive bleeding while preserving the uterus and ovaries. They also thanked the nursing team comprising Jyoti, Pragati, Sonali and Vandana for bringing the patient back to recovery path.
