Many private and corporate schools across Telangana have remained closed today, July 10, 2026, following a statewide bandh called by a coalition of student organisations. However, the Telangana School Education Department has not announced an official statewide holiday for educational institutions. The closure pattern differs across institutions. While several private school managements declared a holiday in advance, government schools have not received any official closure order. Students and parents have been advised to confirm the status of classes directly with their respective schools before travelling.Private schools announce holidayA large number of private and corporate schools informed parents through text messages that classes would remain suspended on July 10. The decision was taken by individual managements to avoid disruption to student transport and campus operations during the bandh.Government schools and state-run educational institutions continue to function without an official holiday notification. However, normal activities at some campuses may be affected because of protests organised in different parts of the state. Why has the bandh been called? The educational institution bandh has been called by a joint platform of student organisations, including the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), All India Students’ Federation (AISF), Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO).The organisations are seeking changes in several areas of the education sector. Among their demands is the withdrawal of a proposal that they claim would consolidate nearly 27,000 government schools into around 4,000 cluster campuses. They have also called for a fee regulation law to address fee collection practices in private educational institutions. Other demands include the appointment of a full-time Education Minister and the filling of vacant posts for teachers, Mandal Education Officers (MEOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs).Weekend schedule for schoolsFor private schools that declared a holiday on July 10, the closure extends into a three-day weekend with the second Saturday on July 11 and Sunday on July 12.The Telangana government has previously directed that July 11 will be treated as a working day for state-run schools to compensate for academic time lost earlier. Despite this, several private institutions are continuing with their own holiday schedule based on management decisions.
