NEW DELHI: As social activist Sonam Wangchuk’s health is deteriorating as his hunger strike enters into the 19th day, Supreme Court Bar Association(SCBA) on Thursday urged him to end his fast and expressed regret that the system was not responding to the issues raised by him.Passing a resolution in support of the activist, SCBA said that his fast has awakened public conscience but urged him not to put his life in jeopardy, saying the country needs him to remain alive, active, engaged, and able to lead from the front. “The Committee expresses regret that despite a person of Mr. Wangchuk’s integrity being willing to undertake such an extreme step for the betterment of the education system, institutional conscience has not responded with the urgency and sensitivity the moment demands. We note with deep concern a period marked by systemic failures affecting millions of young citizens and a troubling erosion of accountability across public institutions,” it said.It said that through his present fast, Wangchuk has once again served the national conscience, reminding the country that moral courage is indispensable to national character. “The message that emerges is clear: each of us must do our bit to strengthen the nation’s moral fabric and uphold the values that sustain India’s constitutional democracy,” it said.“The Committee acknowledges that Mr. Wangchuk’s fast has stirred the nation and awakened public conscience. However, the Committee is of the considered view that India does not need him to place his life in jeopardy for a system in distress. India needs him to remain alive, active, engaged, and able to lead from the front. The long journey of strengthening institutions and restoring public faith requires his continued presence and full strength,” it said .
