Anthropic acquired Vercept, a startup focused on AI perception and software interaction, to accelerate Claude’s computer use capabilities. The team includes Ross Girshick, a prominent computer vision researcher, alongside co-founders Kiana Ehsani and Luca Weihs. Vercept will shut down its external product and fold into Anthropic. The timing tracks with real momentum – Claude Sonnet 4.6 jumped to 72.5% on the OSWorld benchmark, up from under 15% in late 2024, putting it near human-level on tasks like navigating spreadsheets and filling web forms. Coming after the Bun acquisition, Anthropic is clearly buying teams to fill specific capability gaps rather than making broad strategic bets. The race to make AI agents that reliably operate desktop software is now an acqui-hire contest.
