Lucknow: The Lucknow Police Commissionerate has revealed the sophisticated technological infrastructure used by an international cyber fraud syndicate to target foreign nationals, particularly citizens of the United States, following a detailed forensic examination of digital evidence seized during recent crackdowns on fake call centres.Additional DCP, Crime, Kiran Yadav, said the findings are part of the ongoing investigation into two organised cyber fraud syndicates busted by the Crime Branch on July 1 and July 18, 2026.During the operations, police seized many computers, laptops, mobile phones, networking equipment and other electronic devices allegedly used in the commission of cyber fraud.Based on the seizures, cases were registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Lucknow, under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act and the Telecommunications Act, 2023, said the ADCP.Yadav said the scientific analysis of the seized digital devices has provided investigators with crucial insights into the technical modus operandi adopted by the international fake call centre network. The tools purchased at almost zero rupees and available on the net led the fraudsters to make crores.“Investigators found that instead of using the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network or conventional international telephone systems, the accused relied on Voice over Internet Protocol technology, enabling them to establish internet-based voice calls with victims abroad,” said Yadav.Police said VoIP technology allows voice communication to be transmitted over Internet Protocol networks rather than conventional telephone lines, making international calling more efficient and significantly harder to trace through traditional telecom records.Police said forensic examination of all seized digital devices is continuing. Investigators are reconstructing the complete communication network, tracing the digital trail, identifying the internet infrastructure used, determining the role of each accused and collecting evidence against suspected foreign handlers linked to the racket. The Lucknow Police Commissionerate said it is also coordinating with telecom service providers and other competent agencies to obtain additional technical information required for the investigation into the international cyber fraud network.
