Lucknow: People facing harassment, land grabbing, property fraud or other criminal acts by individuals posing as advocates can now approach a dedicated Special Cell set up by the Lucknow Police Commissionerate, which has renewed public outreach after receiving continued complaints against such elements. The Commissionerate said on Friday that the Special Cell is functioning under directions of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad high court . It monitors complaints against persons who allegedly misuse the legal profession as a cover for organised criminal activities, including illegal occupation of land, houses, plots, commercial buildings and other properties. The cell was constituted on Dec 8, 2023, following high court directions issued during the hearing of Criminal Miscellaneous Writ Petition No. 8810 of 2023 (Anil Kumar Khanna vs. State of Uttar Pradesh and Others). The court had instructed police to create a dedicated mechanism and ensure wide publicity through newspapers, electronic media and other platforms.Police said complaints against such “advocate-clad” criminals are still being received, prompting the Commissionerate to again inform citizens about the facility. The Special Cell functions under the supervision of the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), who is the nodal officer. It operates from Room No. 36 in the Joint Commissioner’s office and is headed by Sub-Inspector Rameshwar Tiwari. Citizens can contact him on 9454634500.
