NEW DELHI: Scientist and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was discharged from Gurgaon’s Medanta Hospital on Monday after nearly a week of medical supervision following his prolonged hunger strike, which had ended days earlier.After his discharge, Wangchuk is scheduled to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before returning to his home in Ladakh.Announcing the development on X, Wangchuk wrote with a video post, “AND FINALLY…. I’m being discharged from the hospital. Will be going to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and then back to the mountains.”“Thank you all and BIG THANK YOU to the wonderful team of doctors and staff at Medanta Hospital Gurgaon,” he added.Medanta Hospital health bulletin said, “Sonam Wangchuk, who was admitted to Medanta Hospital, Gurugram on 21.07.2026, has been discharged today. He was treated under an integrated protocol involving internal medicine, critical care and allied specialties, in keeping with Medanta’s standard of coordinated multi-specialty care. At the time of discharge, he was stable and alert with vital signs within normal range. He has been advised routine follow-up on an outpatient basis.”Wangchuk had come into the spotlight after leading a 26-day hunger strike at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, becoming the face of the student agitation demanding the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as Union education minister over the NEET UG paper leak.During his 26-day long hunger strike Wangchuk lost over 10 kg body weight.The protest concluded after multiple rounds of talks between a delegation of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and the Centre. Pradhan later resigned from his post, following which the Narendra Modi-led government appointed senior BJP leader Pralhad Joshi as the new Union education minister.
