CHENNAI: Kayalvizhi Alagiri, daughter of former Union minister MK Alagiri, was formally arrested and released on station bail by the Adyar Police on Tuesday in connection with the assault of an SBI branch manager at the bank’s NRI branch in Adyar. She appeared before the investigating officer after being summoned under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and was questioned for about two hours.According to the police, the case arose from an incident on July 20, after Harshin Singh, manager of the SBI NRI branch, raised concerns over a malfunctioning lift in the commercial building owned by Kayalvizhi. Police said repeated requests to rectify the fault through the building’s representatives remained unresolved, prompting the manager to contact her directly.Investigators said Kayalvizhi later visited the branch, where an argument broke out over the lift issue. During the altercation, she assaulted and threatened the manager. The incident was captured on the bank’s CCTV cameras, and the footage later circulated on social media.Based on a complaint lodged by Namachivayam, chief manager of SBI Regional Business Office-II, the Adyar Police registered a case under Sections 296(b), 329(4), 115(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. As the offences carry a maximum punishment of less than three years, police formally arrested Kayalvizhi and released her on station bail in accordance with legal procedure. She was directed to cooperate with the investigation and inform the police before leaving the city.
