Amp is shutting down its VS Code and Cursor extensions on March 5, consolidating entirely around its CLI. The reasoning is blunt – with models like GPT-5.3 Codex, the agent wrapper no longer matters. Prompts, tool orchestration, LSP diagnostics, the whole scaffolding that coding agents competed on has been eclipsed by raw model capability. Amp’s argument is that the real bottleneck now sits with how codebases and organizations are structured for AI, not with the agent layer itself. The CLI is framed as transitional too, a ladder they expect to eventually discard. It is a sharp bet in a market where Cursor, Windsurf, and Claude Code are all doubling down on deeper editor integration and richer tooling around the model.
