Anthropic consolidated its red-teaming, societal impact, and economic research groups into a single unit called the Anthropic Institute, led by co-founder Jack Clark. The new body will stress-test frontier models, study how AI reshapes labor markets, and explore questions around machine values and recursive self-improvement. Notably, Anthropic hired a Yale Law professor to run a dedicated AI-and-rule-of-law program – a niche that most labs have ignored entirely. The timing tracks with a broader pattern: labs are building internal governance arms as external regulation remains fragmented. Whether these institutes produce binding constraints or just publishable research is the question that matters.
