Lucknow: Raising concerns over the state of the Constitution, senior Congress leaders invoked the legacy of social reformer Jyotiba Phule at a state-level advocates’ conference organised by the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday. The event, held to mark Phule’s birth anniversary, brought together party leaders, legal experts and members of the advocates’ fraternity, with speakers highlighting the relevance of social justice and constitutional values in present times. Addressing the gathering, Rajya Sabha MP and senior Supreme Court lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the Constitution is “not just a document but the beating heart of Indian democracy,” adding that advocates are “guardians of justice and soldiers of the Constitution” and must rise to defend its core principles. Former Union minister Salman Khurshid, who presided over the programme, said the Constitution represents the soul of India and serves as a guiding force for millions, particularly the marginalised. Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari urged lawyers to take inspiration from figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and BR Ambedkar, emphasising that the legal profession has historically played a pivotal role in upholding justice and democratic rights. Congress general secretary and in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Avinash Pande highlighted Phule’s contribution to social reform, noting that his ideas on equality, education and empowerment continue to resonate. State Congress president Ajay Rai alleged that constitutional values were being weakened and called for collective action to safeguard democratic institutions. Meanwhile, Congress legislature party leader Aradhana Mishra said the Constitution is a product of sustained struggle and sacrifice, and its protection requires active participation from all sections, especially the legal community.
