NEW DELHI: Former FBI director Robert S. Mueller III, who led the probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and examined Donald Trump’s ties to Russia, has died at the age of 81, according to family and media reports.Mueller died on Friday, March 20, his family said in a statement released the following day. “With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away,” they said, according to the Associated Press. “His family asks that their privacy be respected,” the statement continued. No details were provided about the location or cause of death.Reuters, citing MS Now and people familiar with the matter, also reported that Mueller died on Friday at the age of 81.In a post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump reacted to the news, writing, “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”Mueller, a former federal prosecutor, was widely known for leading the high-profile investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible links between Moscow and Trump’s campaign.In August 2025, Mueller’s family had disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease four years earlier and had begun experiencing difficulty with speech and mobility.
