Google launched two major Maps features built on Gemini: Ask Maps, a conversational interface for location queries, and Immersive Navigation, a 3D driving overhaul with redesigned visuals, lane-level guidance, and more natural voice directions. Ask Maps rolls out now in the U.S. and India across Android and iOS, letting users ask open-ended questions like finding a phone charger without a coffee line wait. Immersive Navigation brings photorealistic 3D buildings and terrain into the turn-by-turn view, which Google calls its biggest driving update in over a decade. The move mirrors a broader pattern where mapping and search products are being rebuilt around LLM interfaces rather than keyword input. Apple Maps has nothing comparable shipping yet, which makes the timing pointed.
