Lucknow: The Koneshwar Mahadev Temple in Chowk is set for a tourism-oriented facelift, with UP tourism earmarking Rs 1 crore to enhance pilgrim amenities while preserving the shrine’s traditional and spiritual essence.Tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh said the temple is an important part of the city’s religious and cultural landscape. Beliefs associated with the site link it to the Ramayana period and to Lord Ram’s brother Lakshman. Situated on the banks of the Gomti, the temple is associated with the ashram of sage Kaundinya. The temple’s Shivling, placed in a corner of the sanctum, gives it a distinct identity and attracts devotees from across the state and neighbouring states, particularly during the month of Shravan. As part of the development plan, the temple complex will be upgraded with enhanced lighting, clean drinking water, modern sanitation facilities, and dedicated spaces for rest and meditation. The minister emphasized that the initiative is aimed at improving comfort and accessibility for devotees while safeguarding the sanctity and traditional character of the shrine.Explaining the historical belief linked to the site, the minister said that Lakshman, while returning after leaving Sita in the forest, stayed at sage Kaundinya’s ashram on the banks of the Gomti. On the sage’s guidance, Lakshman performed abhishek of the Shivling established there. Over time, Kaundinyeshwar Mahadev came to be known as Koneshwar Mahadev. The temple sees a sharp rise in footfall during Shravan. The temple is easily accessible from Charbagh Railway Station by auto-rickshaws, cabs, and city buses, making it part of the city’s religious and heritage circuit.Referring to tourism trends, Jaiveer Singh said Lucknow has emerged as a blend of spiritual, historical, and cultural significance. With improved connectivity and infrastructure, the city recorded over 15 million tourists in 2025, including more than 38,000 foreign visitors. The recognition of Lucknow as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy also contributed to its profile. He said the development of Koneshwar Mahadev Temple aligns with UP Tourism’s broader plan to strengthen heritage-linked tourism in the state.
