Peter Steinberger, the Austrian developer behind viral AI assistant OpenClaw, is joining OpenAI – choosing reach over running his own company. OpenClaw gained traction by actually doing things most AI tools fumble: booking flights, managing calendars, handling logistics without constant prompting. Steinberger was blunt about his reasoning, saying he’d rather ship through OpenAI’s infrastructure than spend years scaling a business. The project stays open-source, which softens the blow for its community. Still, the hire fits a now-familiar pattern where frontier labs absorb independent builders who’ve proven real product instincts – and it raises the usual question of whether that scrappy energy survives once it’s inside a company running at OpenAI’s scale.
