Oracle and OpenAI dropped plans to expand the flagship Stargate data center in Abilene, Texas from 1.2 to 2.0 gigawatts after months of stalled negotiations over financing and OpenAI’s shifting capacity forecasts. It was the first Stargate site to go live since the $500 billion joint venture was announced, which makes the pullback notable. OpenAI says the capacity is being redirected to other locations, including a site with Oracle in Wisconsin, but the gap left Meta circling – Nvidia reportedly helped broker talks for Meta to lease the expansion site from developer Crusoe. The Stargate buildout has been messy from the start, with announced commitments routinely outpacing signed contracts, and this is the clearest sign yet that demand projections are being recalibrated in real time.
