The Department of Defense formally notified Anthropic that it considers the company a supply chain risk – the first time an American AI firm has received that designation. The move follows Anthropic’s refusal to strip safety guardrails from Claude for military use, specifically around mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons systems. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth now requires every contractor and supplier working with the Pentagon to certify they have no commercial relationship with Anthropic. The timing is awkward: CNBC reported the DOD is still actively using Claude in operations related to Iran. A Big Tech industry coalition has already pushed back, warning Hegseth that the designation creates uncertainty that could limit the military’s access to leading AI tools – an argument that carries weight given how few frontier model providers actually exist.
