Lucknow: Two policemen posted in the office of Deoria’s superintendent of police have been arrested on charges of allegedly duping a retired army man of Rs 15 lakh by promising to secure him a govt job.Stenographer Afzal Khan and constable Deepak Singh were sent to jail on Sunday, police said.According to officials, the case came to light after a complaint was filed by retired soldier Prashant Kumar Dwivedi of Rampur Dubey village in the Mahuadih police station area. Dwivedi alleged that the two policemen, with whom he had prior acquaintance, promised to help him get a govt job after his retirement in 2019.Dwivedi told police that the accused demanded Rs 15 lakh to arrange a job for him. Trusting them, he allegedly mortgaged his house to arrange the money and handed over the amount to the two policemen. However, even after nearly seven years, he did not get the promised job, and the money was not returned. When Dwivedi repeatedly demanded his money back, the accused allegedly began threatening him. According to the complainant, the policemen used their position in the SP office to intimidate him and allegedly threatened to implicate him in false criminal cases.During the dispute over repayment, the wife of constable Deepak Singh reportedly issued a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to Dwivedi. However, the cheque later bounced. Dwivedi submitted the bounced cheque as evidence during the police inquiry initiated after he approached the SP with his complaint. After a preliminary investigation found merit in the allegations, the SP ordered registration of a case against the accused.Kotwali SHO Rakesh Rai confirmed that Afzal Khan and Deepak Singh have been remanded to judicial custody.
