AYODHYA: Police have detained three men after a video allegedly showing four people consuming mutton and drinking alcohol on the Saryu River went viral, an officer said on Sunday.The incident reportedly took place on a boat near Guptaar Ghat. Following the circulation of the video on social media, police launched an investigation and detained three of the accused. Efforts are underway to trace the fourth individual, officials said.The detained men were identified as Lavkush Nishad, Jitendra Nishad and Rajkumar Nishad. According to news agency PTI, police alleged that their actions hurt the religious sentiments of devotees who consider the Saryu River sacred.Similar incidents have been reported in Uttar Pradesh in recent months. In June, Varanasi Police arrested five men after a video purportedly showed them cooking chicken and drinking beer on a boat in the Ganga. According to Dasasvamedh ACP Atul Anjan Tripathi, the accused, aged between 25 and 32, were sent to jail and their boat was seized.Earlier, in March, 14 people were arrested after a video allegedly showed them eating chicken biryani during an Iftar gathering on a boat in the Ganga. Police registered a case on charges of defiling a place of worship and hurting religious sentiments following a complaint filed by BJP Yuva Morcha’s Varanasi city unit chief, Rajat Jaiswal.(With agency inputs)
