Lucknow: Although late by 12 days, arrival of southwest monsoon comes as a good news for the state reeling under severe hot and humid conditions with a threat of drought looming large due to scanty rainfall in 64 out of 75 districts in UP in the month of Jun.According to Regional Meteorological Centre, Lucknow, (RMCL), overall, the state was reeling under 54% below normal rainfall in Jun. In Lucknow, rain deficit stands at a whopping 80% below normal.District-wise figures revealed that only 11 of the state’s 75 districts received normal rainfall in Jun, while 28 were in the deficient category and 35 recorded large deficiency. Kaushambi received no rain during the month.RMCL senior scientist Mohammad Danish said rainfall activity is expected to strengthen further over next few days under the influence of a fresh western disturbance.Met officials attribute poor rainfall so far in the rainy season to the development of ‘super El Nino’, a climatic condition responsible for weak monsoon in India.
