The image of a fighter aircraft often comes to mind when one thinks of multi-role aircraft. These aircraft, especially those from the fourth generation onward, are designed from the outset to perform multiple roles such as air combat, bombing, reconnaissance and electronic warfare. Yet when speaking of multi-role aircraft, one rarely thinks of the versatile transport aircraft. Transport aircraft have moved far beyond their traditional role of ferrying men and material to where they are needed, in war and in peace.Many a time, as demonstrated by the Indian Air Force (IAF) during Operation Maitri in Nepal, Operation Sankat Mochan in South Sudan, Operation Devi Shakti in Afghanistan and Operation Kaveri in Sudan, the first aircraft deployed in a crisis is a transport aircraft. In the operations listed above, the IAF deployed transport aircraft in conflict and disaster-hit zones to extricate trapped civilians. The air force was able to rescue both Indian and foreign nationals in these instances. During Operation Kaveri, IAF transport aircraft landed at Wadi Seidna Air Base, north of Khartoum in Sudan, even though the air base was not operational and its runway lights were switched off. IAF pilots landed using night-vision devices to rescue those trapped by the ongoing civil war.The current fleet of transport aircraft, such as Lockheed Martin’s C-130, Embraer’s C-390 and Airbus’ A400M, is being used for a wide variety of roles that go far beyond the basic brief of a transport aircraft. These platforms have evolved into multi-role assets capable of performing missions ranging from aerial refuelling to firefighting. Their adaptability has made them indispensable in both combat and humanitarian operations, demonstrating their importance not just in power projection but also as instruments of national will.One of the most iconic aircraft flying across the world today is the C-130. First introduced in the 1950s, the aircraft has steadily expanded its role through upgrades and modifications. The C-130 can be configured for tactical airlift, medical evacuation, special operations, information warfare and, in a more storied role, as a gunship. It has also been configured for air-to-air refuelling, and its slow speed makes it capable of refuelling helicopters as well. The aircraft has been used extensively in firefighting roles across the world, from Australia to Canada. The famous Entebbe raid in July 1976, in which Israeli commandos rescued hostages from Uganda, was also carried out using this aircraft. The IAF operates the C-130 across a wide range of environments, from the tropical forests of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the Daulat Beg Oldie advanced landing ground near the Karakoram Pass in eastern Ladakh.The Embraer C-390 Millennium represents a newer generation of transport aircraft, designed from the outset with multi-mission flexibility in mind. With a payload capacity of 26 tonnes, it was developed by the Brazilian firm to replace aging C-130 fleets. It incorporates advanced avionics and fly-by-wire controls. The aircraft is designed for rapid reconfiguration, allowing operators to switch between cargo transport, troop transport, parachute operations, medical evacuation and aerial refuelling with minimal downtime. This adaptability has made it attractive to several NATO countries.The Airbus A400M Atlas, Airbus’ flagship military transport aircraft, bridges strategic and tactical capabilities in a single airframe. With a payload capacity of 37 tonnes, the A400M can carry heavy equipment such as armoured vehicles and is also equipped for aerial refuelling. Beyond combat roles, it has been used for humanitarian missions. Despite its size, it can operate from short and unprepared runways, like the C-130 and the C-390. The aircraft has also been deployed for firefighting in Europe’s ongoing wildfire emergencies, dropping large volumes of water or retardant to help contain the flames.Modern transport aircraft have moved far beyond their traditional roles. Their ability to adapt to different mission sets makes them true force multipliers. From delivering troops to combat zones and refuelling strike aircraft to evacuating casualties and fighting wildfires, transport aircraft have become central to both military strategy and humanitarian relief operations.
